Abstract
The object of study is to introduce dissolved air flotation(DAF) as an advenced water treatment process for the more safe drinking water. DAF is an alternative clarification process to settling in which particles are removed by attachment to air bubbles and then floated to the liquid surface. DAF has been used in Europe for over 20 years, but is an emerging technology in United States. DAF is a much more efficient process than sedimentation for the separation of particles. And DAF tanks are much smaller than conventional sedimentation tanks, hence a considerable savings in capital costs can be realized. Other potential adventages of DAF are removal of volatile organics and tastes and oders by oxidation and air stripping during flotation. This paper presents the principles and some applications of DAF system in the treatment of drinking water and illustrates some demonstrations of the bench scale experiment, and discusses the possibility of practical application as well.
