Discrimination of 2-Methylisoborneol and Geosmin in Water Samples using an Electronic Tongue and Electronic Nose

Abstract
The presence of certain compounds in water give the water an unpleasant taste and odor. Head-space solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-SPME GC/MS) is commonly used to analyze taste and odor substances. However, this method requires skilled analytical techniques, the equipment is expensive, and the analysis is time consuming. Recently, an electronic tongue (E-tongue) and electronic nose (E-nose), which use electronic sensors and provide data that can be quickly and easily analyzed, have begun to be used. In this study, the potential for these devices was evaluated for their use in analyzing geosmin (GE) and 2-methylisoborneol (MIB), which are representative taste and odor substances that can be generated by algae. A Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that E-tongue was able to discriminate changes in the concentration of GE of 0.02 μg/L, 2 μg/L, 20 μg/L, and 200 μg/L. For MIB, E-tongue could detect concentration changes of 0.02 μg/L, 0.2 μg/L, 2 μg/L, and 20 μg/L. The results for E-nose showed an R2 of 0.98 for detecting changes of 20 μg/L, 100 μg/L , and 200 μg/L in concentrations of GE. For MIB, the E-nose was able to detect changes of 0.2 μg/L, 2 μg/L, 20 μg/L, 100 μg/L, and 200 μg/L with an R2 of 0.70. The HS-SPMEGC/MS analysis required 2 hours per sample, whereas E-tongue required 3 minutes per sample and E-nose 30minutes.
